Social Media

Social Media has taken the world by storm and is one of the most effective ways for a business to engage and interact with their customers. The biggest advantage of Social Media is that it’s FREE, and anyone can setup a social media profile, such as a FaceBook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest.

As a business, the catch comes when you want to grow your following, and this is when you will have to start spending on advertising, to reach a larger audience. If you have the money to spend on advertising, then it’s possible to target a very specific audience, by age, interest, region and etc.

Updating and maintaining your Social Media accounts can become extremely time consuming, and this is why most companies outsource this work. The problem with this, is that it can become quite expensive paying someone to design and post all your social media content. On top of this, you would need to pay for regular advertising, to actually promote all the promotions and content that you have created.

So whats the solution? It starts with figuring out what you are looking to achieve online, and then picking the right platform to reach your target market. It’s no use spreading yourself too thin, rather focus on one or two of them, and then forget about the rest.

At the end of the day, you need to be spending your money on the things that grow your business. Marketing should be an investment, and not an expense. Go back to the basics, who is your ideal customer, and what are they looking for? How can you help them as quickly and effectively as possible?

In order to create a successful social media profile, you would need to focus on building your tribe of die hard fans. Don’t try cheat the system, by buying fake followers. You will just be wasting your money. It might look good at a first glance to have a large following, but it’s not going to help you, when you try connecting with them, if they don’t exist.

How can I get started?

The best place to start online would be FaceBook. The reason being that its extremely easy to create a company page, and you could probably have it up and running in a few minutes. Once you have setup the basics, focus on creating an eye catching header, and then uploading some basic information about your company, and a few photos. Then start connecting with any friends and family that would help spread the word.

If you have the money to spend on advertising, then you could place a few adverts that would target people that might be interested in your product or service. The adverts can be setup to target a specific gender, age group and industry. This way you would be saving money by narrowing your audience to a specific niche.

What’s next?

Now that you have a FaceBook Page, and you have started to gain a following, you would need to keep it up to date with any news, or activities that you maybe be hosting, or attending. You could also post regular specials and promotions to help increase your following.

Depending on your audience, you might want to also focus on Twitter, Instagram, or Pinterest. I would suggest to just pick one, and try focus on that as well. Instagram is now owned by Facebook, and they work well together. If you have a lot of photos, or you are an inspiring photographer, then Instagram is the place to be. Pinterest is more for design and inspiration, and Twitter is more for posting short messages, while on the go.
